About the Location

Myanmar is in Southeast Asia bordered by India to the west, China to the north and Thailand to the east. For a long time, it was not a touristic destination. In recent years, however, it has gained popularity among tourists.

The program is based in Mandalay. Mandalay is a favorite among those who visit Myanmar as it has a great number of attractions, including the Golden Palace Monastery, the Mahamuni Pagoda, the Kuthodaw Pagoda, Mingun Temple, the Bargaya Monastery.

Accommodation & Meals

You will be staying at an authentic Buddhist monastic school located in Northeastern Mandalay. The monastery is the home to over thousand children aged 7-18 whose parents are unable to care for or whose homes are too far from Mandalay. Monks reside here as well. The students are friendly and always curious to meet newcomers so this is a good opportunity for cultural exchange!

The accommodation is located inside the city of Mandalay, and anything you might need is located close by. The accommodation is at the same place where programs take place. It is located fifteen minutes walk from the northern gate of Mandalay Palace. While not located in the center, it is still a busy hub with plenty of restaurants, traditional coffee shops and markets around. The city center is located a 10 minute drive away and you can reach it via public transport or by hiring a taxi from the taxi stand located right outside the main door.

There are three meals served during the week inside the accommodation and two during the weekend. Food will served as Burmese food, which has a lots of rice, vegetables, meat and egg. We provide three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day on weekdays and two (breakfast and dinner) on weekends.

GapXperience Testimonial Myanmar

“I had an awesome time! The coordinator Monica looked after me very well and we always cooked together or bought street food and she made sure I knew what I would be doing each day as well showing me around Mandalay and teaching me lots about the culture and customs. Everyone at the school was very welcoming and eager to interact and learn. I spent some time on projects and some time teaching depending on each day but this worked out very well. I stayed in a dorm at the monastery that was quite comfortable. I really enjoyed my experience and can’t wait to do something similar again and for longer next time!”

Monastery School Teaching

Teach English and other valuable life skills at a local monastery school in Mandalay. Founded in 1993 by two monks, the school is a home of over a 1,000 people, and now teaches over 6,000 students with difficult upbringing. Most of the students come from rural areas and would not get an opportunity to be educated and learn outside of this monastery.

Construction & Renovation

Work in renovation activities that will improve the living standards of the villagers residing around our center. This project asks you to get your hands dirty doing light construction work, repairs and renovations for the local community. We continuously scout the village surroundings for homes, schools, temples and clinics that need work to be done. Many local villagers need help with renovation and light construction. The little they earn goes towards their daily expenses, so it is common for their living quarters to be left in bad condition for a long time.
