Dalat – A bit further afield than the rest but still reachable from La Gi (213 kilometers away). Dalat is another must in Vietnam. Known as “the city of love”. It is so beautiful that, during the Colonial times, the French dubbed it their favorite destination in the country. The town is filled with pagodas, French architecture, flower gardens and even a “Crazy House”, a gallery, hostel and coffee shop that was built to look like a tree. Aside from enjoying the city, you can also head out of town to numerous waterfalls and stunning nature.

In Ho Chi Minh, our partner works with three different orphanages where children rescued from the streets reside now. At this project, you will be taking care of the children and giving them the attention they need. Moreover, you will teach them English and other life skills.

Caretaking
At our primary orphanage, all the orphans are below the age of 5 years old and in need of a lot of care and attention. You will feed, bathe, dress and play games with the children. At the other orphanages, you will also find orphans from higher age groups who you will assist with homework, social skills and life skills.

Teaching English
The level of English possessed by the children is relatively low. Therefore, another of our focuses is teaching them the language. You should focus on more basic aspects, such as simple vocabulary, basic conversation and simple writing. Classes are constructed into two levels of higher and lower levers.

Aims & Objectives
All the children at the projects are genuine orphans of which some have previously been living on the streets. Therefore, the objective here is to instill confidence into the children and offer them a safe place to shelter, give them warmth and attention, educate them and provide them with food and clothing. The orphanages are places which nourish the children and allow them to blossom. It is a self-funded orphanage.

Schedule
Monday
If this is your first week, you will be introduced to the orphanage and the staff.
Tuesday to Friday
You will begin your orphanage experience. Caretaking of the children and teaching the English language is one of the priorities.

The children at this day care center are from families that doesn’t have the means to provide for the daily care of their offspring. Here you can make a difference by taking care of these children in the form of; feeding them, comforting them, play games with them and make them socially more active. Create new activities with your talents and broaden the life perspectives and qualities of these children in need!

At this project, you tasks and activities will be according to the needs of the hospital at the given time. You will be playing a vital role in the continued development of the region. This government hospital has an extremely limited budget and very basic means. Renovation and construction work are continually being carried out by the hospital and you will engage in this line of work. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to assist in some mild nursing works such as comforting patients, washing linen, gardening and helping with the porter at the hospital. These are all important roles, vital to the success of the hospital. You will also engage in a cultural exchange with staff members and patients of the hospital, who will be extremely grateful for your presence.

Aims & Objectives
The hospital is Government operated. Its primary aim is to offer effective treatment to a large number of citizens from Ho Chi Minh. You will be able to support the hospital with construction and renovation work, help the patients, make new friends, develop useful skills and keep the place hygienic for the patients where needed.

This project offers participants the opportunity to teach English, but with a twist. Rather the teaching to young children, they will be teaching their peers. These are students, aged between 19-25, who are hospitality students. This two way learning, through cultural exchange allows life-time friendships to be formed. You will be playing the role of teaching assitant inside a college. This is often in the form of role plays, to re-enact real-life scenes from the hospitality industry. For this, you do not need to prepare teaching materials before hand, but rather be spontaneous and creative throughout the day.

You will regularly attend the classes and have maximum interaction with the students throughout the day. You will be able to spend your free time during the evenings and weekends with the friends you will make throughout your stay. The students here are always keen to improve their English and welcome foreigners into their culture and to show you their way of life.

Assist as a mentor, teacher and caretaker at this sea-town village orphanage, bringing smiles to its children along the way! In this rural village project, you’ll work with a small community orphanage that houses children ranging from newborn to 18 years of age. You will help instill confidence in the children, caretaking, educating and mentoring them.

Come and assist this boarding home caring for children, some who are without families and others from extremely poor backgrounds. You will be taking care of them and giving them the attention and assistance they need. Some children from higher age groups (up to 18 years of age) will need your help with homework, social skills and life skills. The level of English possessed by these children is also very low, so one of our focuses is teaching them English, a very useful skill. You should focus on the basics, such as simple vocabulary, basic conversation and simple writing.

Help as a caretaker for children with mental and physical disabilities at a local children’s home in La Gi Village. The children at this daycare center are from families that don’t have the means to provide for the daily care of their offspring. In this project, you will take care of these children by feeding them, comforting them, playing games with them and helping to make them more socially active.

Each of the two care-homes in this area cater for around 25 Vietnamese children with various disabilities, mainly blindness, but also mental health issues. Experience in this field (or one similar such as nursing, elderly care, child care), would be advantageous but is not essential. The children are around the ages of 5-20 years old and are all from families who cannot afford to pay for the daily care of their children. Some of these children are well enough to go to school, others make themselves useful at a local massage parlour. But for those too young or unable physically or mentally to do either, their whole day is spent at this caring facility, where your help would go a long way!

The main role you will play at this program is caring for the children. This will be in the form of spending quality time with them, comforting them and socialising with them. You will also be arranging activities for the children, teaching them simple english words and phrases through lessons, games and conversations. You can also help in the daily tasks of the centre, like creating handicrafts to raise money, preparing food and assisting the children in their daily tasks.

Activities encouraged and enjoyed by the children include playing games, dancing, singing and arts and crafts. Any activity that would encourage creativity is welcomed for the children. So if you would like to bring any materials to assist with the aforementioned activities, this would be warmly received!

Aims & Objectives
To care for disabled children and work together to improve their quality of life.
To provide insight into the local work ethic and culture through the local organisation and staff.
Provide you with teaching and disabled-care experience.

Schedule
Monday
If this is your first week, you will be introduced to the project and the staff. At this point you will also discuss your upcoming role at the project. You will be introduced to the children and discuss your role with the manager.
Tuesday to Friday
Here, you will begin your disabled children’s home placement. Your exact role will depend upon the needs of the disabled children’s home at the time. When not directly caring for them or assisting the centre with tasks, playing games with the children is encouraged. You can expect to work up to 4-5 hours per day.
*This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Improve the homes and community buildings of the La Gi fishing village through light construction work. You will need to get your hands dirty to improve the living standards of this seaside village! Your team will take part in housing renovation and light construction like painting, but you may also find yourself doing some basic repairing of chairs, tables, walls and anything else the locals need.

Many of the villagers here in La Gi need help with renovation and light construction. The little they earn goes towards their daily expenses, and as a result, it’s common for living quarters to be left in bad condition. This situation extends to communal areas such as schools, temples, and clinics too. In fact there are many places that need help due to the tight budgets they have for their organisation. It is common for a renovation budget to be very small because of other more important priorities. This is where we saw a way to help!

Through some renovation and light construction using the energy from our participants, we can assist the community while allowing you to engage with the local area and people and learn more about it’s people and culture.
Work can include housing renovation and light construction like painting. Typical tasks could be repairing chairs, tables, building walls, toilets etc. Tasks will depend on local conditions and what is needed at the time. You can expect to be working 4-5 hours a day.

Aims & Objectives
To create intercultural exchanges through our efforts with the locals
To support local villagers with an organized workforce
